Endoscopic spine surgery is one of the most minimally invasive options available, so why is it so hard to find a surgeon who offers it? The spinal endoscope has been around for a very long time. I actually call it the oldest state of the art procedure in my toolbox. But it is not taught in most spine training programs during residency, internship, and fellowship. That is probably the biggest reason it is so rare. The second big reason is that it has a very difficult learning curve. Many of us who started using it years ago when it first came out, and that was like twenty to thirty years ago, had a lot of trouble with it. So we gave up.
