One of the best sessions at Spine Summit was actually the very last morning on Sunday. We heard great discussions on lumbar deformity surgery (Theresa Williamson MD), the constant decision of when to go big vs. when to go minimally invasive, how techniques like single-position lateral surgery are evolving (William Taylor MD), and how deformity surgeons can still adopt endoscopic techniques (Wade Jensen MD). I also loved seeing the next generation of spine surgeons debating uniportal vs. biportal endoscopy (Osama Nezar Kashlan MD MPH and Jang Yoon MD, MSc, FAANS, FCNS). My take is simple: it doesn’t matter which portal you use. If you need to go three ports or four ports, by all means! Do what’s best for the patient in that situation. What matters is that it’s endoscopic.
