Spine surgery and pain management is something I think about carefully for every patient. Everyone perceives pain differently. Some people pain doesn’t bother them that much, but for others it is horrific and they can’t help it. That’s just their physiology. For patients who are going to have acute, short lasting pain after surgery, where the pain is going to go away once the surgical incisions heal, narcotics are the single most effective pain reliever. But they also have tons of negatives, so we are constantly trying to make that balance, not suffering too much but not putting patients at risk for developing a terrible dependency on opiates, because it’s real.
