Surgeons vs Doctors

Watch on YouTube

My week looks nothing like a traditional doctor’s schedule. Mondays and Wednesdays are clinic, Tuesdays and Thursdays are surgery, and Fridays are admin days for add on clinic, surgery, or meetings. You can already tell it is a totally different kind of job. Beyond the schedule, surgeons are doing a lot of mechanical things on patients, not just medical things. You have to be the type of person who loves fixing things, because if you are not, your surgery days are going to be a big drain on your cognitive load. For me personally, I cannot be in the same office every day doing one thing. I like mixing it up. When I was deciding between medicine and surgery, one of the big things was that the OR was the last bastion of a true dictatorship. I rule that world. It is much more teamwork now, but it is as close as it comes. Follow for more on what life in spine surgery actually looks like.
