Advancements in Spine Surgery

Watch on YouTube

Spine surgery is evolving fast, and the advancement I’m most excited about is moving more surgeries to the ambulatory surgery center. Right now, spine surgery is mostly inpatient, and most spine surgeons do everything from big surgeries to small ones. But in the not too distant future, I think we are going to see two types of spine surgeons. There will be the big hospital based revision and reconstruction surgeons who handle pedicle screws, cages, rods, and most of the revisions. And then there will be the sports spine surgeons who take care of herniated discs and one or two level problems, doing almost everything through little openings or with an endoscope, almost entirely in a surgery center. These are two totally different mindsets, two totally different types of teams and skill sets. By choosing one or the other and getting really good at it, patients who have one or the other type of surgery will simply get a higher level of care. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Follow for more on where spine surgery is headed.
