Spine surgery changed Tara’s life after 13 years of pain, and a Tarlov cyst that was missed for years on prior scans. Tara came to me all the way from Atlanta, Georgia after spending 13 years in and out of doctor’s offices. Everything from the waist down hurt. She had a very small Tarlov cyst and lots of pelvic symptoms. The pelvis is far more complicated than the legs or the arms. What struck me was that the Tarlov cyst had shown up on prior scans for years and not one doctor ever mentioned it. Tarlov cysts are one of those things we have all heard of in medical school, but we have all been taught that it is not something you tend to mess with and that it is usually incidental. Here is the rub: most of the time, “usually” is not the same thing as “always.” If you are in that small category of patients with a symptomatic Tarlov cyst, it is a big deal. But we are so brainwashed into thinking virtually no one has symptoms that the bar becomes extreme before anyone recognizes it. I was one of those surgeons too, until about ten years ago.
