Spine surgery for low back pain is one of the most commonly overtreated conditions I see. Fusion has historically been the go to procedure, and for a while we performed a lot of lumbar fusions for low back pain. Over time we found that was not a great plan, so we have greatly limited it and are looking for new ways to treat it. But things change very slowly in surgery, and right or wrong, we still do a lot of fusions for back pain. My take is that we need to think of a different way to treat that problem. It is a very, very difficult problem to deal with. Follow for more on spine health and where the field is heading.
